Text of report by Radio-Television Kosovo TV website on 1 September

After a request made by the Serbian government spokesman for the UN special envoy for Kosova [Kosovo] status talks, Martti Ahtisaari, to apologize to the entire Serbian nation over his recent statement, UNOSEK [UN Office of the Special Envoy for Kosovo] officials said that there was no reason for Ahtisaari to apologize.

Ahtisaari's spokeswoman Hua Jiang said that the UN Special envoy would not apologize for his statements because he was not talking about a collective guilt of the Serbian nation. The statement was taken out of context and was presented incorrectly. Ahtisaari never mentioned the collective guilt of the Serbian nation. He was talking about the historical heritage, specifically that every nation should have the courage to face its past. There is no reason for Ahtisaari to apologize and this is not going to happen, said Ahtisaari's spokeswoman Hua Jiang.

Serbian TV - "Serbian official slams UN Kosovo envoy's 'sabre-rattling' remark"

Source: Serbian official slams UN Kosovo envoy's "sabre-rattling" remark,  BBC Monitoring Europe - Political Supplied by BBC Worldwide Monitoring, September 2, 2006 Saturday, 246 words

Text of report by Serbian TV satellite service on 2 September

The Tanjug agency has relayed [UN Special Envoy for Kosovo Status Talks] Martti Ahtisaari's statement given in reaction to Belgrade's criticism of his statement about the collective guilt of the Serb people. According to Tanjug, Ahtisaari said it was very regrettable that Serbs were starting to sabre-rattle. I am very sorry for them, we discussed the matter after a particular meeting and this was interpreted with a little bit too much exaggeration, Ahtisaari told the Finnish news agency STT.

The Serbian government immediately responded to this. The director of the Serbian government's press relations office, Srdjan Djuric, said that the UN special envoy for Kosovo talks, Martti Ahtisaari, instead of a loud and clear apology has a new grave accusation against Serbia, that it is sabre-rattling. It would be really important that the international mediator explained how exactly Serbia was sabre-rattling. Does he consider Belgrade's request for an apology for the grave insult as sabre-rattling, or does Ahtisaari imply something else by this, Djuric said, inviting the UN envoy to explain what his latest accusation means.

Djuric underlined that he could not but notice that Ahtisaari had no words of condemnation for the terrorist attack in Kosovska Mitrovica which followed directly after his first accusation and was not qualified as sabre rattling.
