The impression one gets from the media is that the Bush administration is a) ideologically committed to imposing Western secular government on Iraq and then perhaps Iran and b) that the Bush administration's policies are entirely different from those of its predecessors, especially Clinton. Our research challenges these conclusions.

[What it's about: We have two articles on Khalilzad, one above this text and one right below. Khalilzad is special assistant to President Bush and senior director at the National Security Council for the Persian Gulf, southwest Asia and other issues in the region, and special envoy to Iraq and Afghanistan and now also Ambassador to Afghanistan. He has not yet taken the title, Czar of all the Russias, but he has it in mind. He's a key planner behind US policy, both in Afghanistan and Iraq. He shares many ideas with the notorious Mr. Brzezinski. Khalilzad's special interest is the political uses of Islamist terror. Why the mutual public denunciation, then? Because it's good theater, and Muslims are watching. Iran accuses the US of doing anything and everything for Israel, a message calculated to incite Muslim audiences around the world and increase the strength of Muslim extremism, which both the US and Iran foster for geopolitical ends.]

[What it's about: At a curiously unpublicized meeting of the IDLO, the top international group which molds legal systems in the "developing countries," the US, Iran, various Western powers and a host of pro-Islamist scholars worked out details for an Islamist legal system in Afghanistan. Notably absent were any secular Afghan scholars and legal specialists. Many thousands of secular Afghans were driven into exile when the Islamists, sponsored by the US and Saudi Arabia, took over their country during the 1980s.
The IDLO's leader endorsed the imposition of Muslim religious law throughout the "developing world". What is going on? Aren't the US and Iran supposed to be enemies? Why are they jointly planning Afghanistan's Islamist future? And doesn't the US claim to oppose the creation of Islamist states? This is a crucial document for understanding our world.]
